Refugee Ministry Update

Here’s an update on the resettlement of our new Afghani family:

They moved into their new apartment on February 26. We had a translator! Malali is a member of the Islamic Association of Cary (Recall: the leader of the IAC spoke at the Adult Forum on Sunday. Thank you, George for making that happen.) Ted Straub followed up with IAC after the meeting to see if they wanted to partner with us in our endeavor! (Thank you, Ted.) They said YES! enthusiastically. They offered to provide the first two meals, today and Saturday, and to provide the first purchase of fresh foods. Wonderful. And since Malali could speak their language, she generously offered to take off work today to come greet them (Thank you Malali).

Both the man, HB, and the woman, RF, speak basic English. They were the last to get off the plane and looked extremely tired and confused when we spotted them. They had spent the night in a hotel near LaGuardia Airport and had gotten up early to arrive by 10:45. Malali greeted them and they soon looked happy and comforted.

Katie Bricio had brought two stuffed animals that one of you had donated and gave them to the two girls. They took to the stuffed animals immediately.

We collected their luggage and took them to their apartment. RF cried when she was told that all those loving donated items were now theirs. Her eyes shown with pleasure.

We were asked not to stay long and we did not, though the case worker did stay to start them on their journey here.

And a shout out to Katie Bricio for all the energy and intelligence she has put into this endeavor.

We will find out if and when we can tell you their names.

For those of you who have additional things to donate to our next family, they are currently being stored at the Center for Hope and Healing (CHH).

We hope to be ready for our next family in April.
